Using a combination of thorough research and creative thinking, Mikula-Harris created the perfect brand strategy and ad campaign to promote tourism in Abingdon, Virginia.

The research showed us that Abingdon is best known as the home of the historic Barter Theatre, whose stage has hosted stars like Gregory Peck, Ernest Borgnine and Patricia Neal. The community also happens to be a terminus of the Virginia Creeper Trail, a very popular rails-to-trails project, along with a thriving arts community and dozens of locally-owned restaurants.

We used all of the insights and research to develop brand messaging that leverages the town’s most famous tourism asset in a way that also introduces the public to Abingdon’s other great amenities.

US Foods is one of the nation’s largest foodservice suppliers. Chances are, you have seen one of their trucks making a delivery to a local restaurant, school cafeteria, summer camp or healthcare facility.

Their customers are foodservice businesses of all sizes, but US Foods does not sell directly to the public. The work Mikula-Harris provided for US Foods is B-to-B marketing, but with a decidedly B-to-C flair. A delicious subject matter deserves exceptionally fun and creative marketing tools.

There are US Foods operations and warehouses all across the country, each one with unique marketing needs for unique regional traditions and cuisines. When branches from Maryland to Florida needed great creative work, Mikula-Harris delivered.

The Upper James River Water Trail

Mention the James River and most people will associate it with downtown Richmond or Jamestown. The river actually begins in Botetourt County at the confluence of two other rivers. The portion that runs through the Blue Ridge Mountains is the most unspoiled and scenic stretch of the river’s nearly 350 miles.

Mikula-Harris developed the branding for the Upper James River Water Trail and helped market this natural treasure to both local residents and out of town visitors. The goal was to ensure that visitation and good stewardship go hand in hand.

In recent years, the Upper James River Water Trail has expanded into neighboring Rockbridge County. Outfitters, fishing guides and camping areas have emerged to serve visitors, proving that economic development flows from good tourism promotion.

Describing our work with Goodwill Industries of the Valleys as annual reports isn’t the whole truth. Yes, the publications come out once a year and they do report important information to the community. But they are mostly about telling inspiring stories of real people.

Great storytelling should be supported by powerful imagery. The Mikula-Harris team always found a way to capture each person’s uniqueness and character, not to mention the common thread that connected their stories.

The results are powerful publications that show the important work being done by Goodwill — offering jobs, training and dignity to people trying to improve their lives. The compelling stories touch the hearts of members of the community and donors, which allows Goodwill to change more lives.

Mecklenburg County is located along Virginia’s southern border with North Carolina. In fact, the county’s biggest tourist draw — Kerr Lake — is actually shared by both states. That prime location means it’s an easily accessible getaway for the urban centers of Richmond, Norfolk, Raleigh and Greensboro.

The county tourism department chose Mikula-Harris to develop a creative campaign to promote Mecklenburg County — not just the lake, but also the charming towns, outdoor recreation, historic sites, wineries and shopping.

The campaign is intriguing and truthful — there really are more public boat launches than stoplights in the county. That’s a perfect example of what makes Mecklenburg County an appealing getaway from big city life.
